Japan’s traditional music is an intrinsic part of their culture and history. There are several types of traditional music in Japan. Read further to know about the most important of them.


Japanese traditional music is called Hogaku. The oldest Japanese traditional music is Gagaku. It is the court music from China and Korea. Then other type of Japanese traditional music is Biwagaku. Biwa is basically a kind of guitar that contains four strings. It is used for playing music.


Sokyoku, Japanese traditional music, is played with the Koto. Koto is a kind of zither that features 13 strings. Sokyoku is also accompanied by Shamisen and Shakuhachi.


Shamisen is a type of guitar which has three strings and Shakuhachi is a bamboo flute that is almost 55 centimeter long. The Shamisen is also used in other type of Japanese music such as Bunraku and Kabuki.


Other Japanese traditional music that is very famous is Nohgaku. This music is usually played during Noah performances therefore the name Nohgaku. The music comprises of chrorus, the Tsuzumi drum, and Hayashi flute,


Japanese folk songs called Minyo are also part of Japanese traditional music.
